Modernizing a Landmark Model Railway Exhibit

Project Overview

The Kaeserberg Museum near Fribourg chose to modernize its model railway exhibition to become a future-proof interactive museum. The concept proposed by Pentagram involved placing differently sized screens throughout the exhibition rooms, creating an immersive environment through films and interactive content. Thanks to Vetra, the content creation for all screen formats has been streamlined, allowing the team to easily update and adapt displays as needed.

Interactive Displays

Visitors can now interact directly with the trains running on the model via 10 newly installed touchscreens. These displays allow users to explore the full catalog of available trains, follow their real-time locations on digital maps, and trigger various physical interactions, such as activating lights and engines.

Enhanced Visitor Experience

The integration of these digital elements has transformed the way visitors engage with the exhibition. Rather than passively observing, visitors become active participants in the story of the railway. Whether it’s tracking a locomotive’s journey or learning about Swiss rail history through multimedia, the museum now offers a rich experience that appeals both to train enthusiasts and casual visitors.

Scalable Design

Designed with future scalability in mind, the new system allows the museum staff to introduce new features, interactions and storylines over time without major infrastructure changes. This ensures the exhibition remains fresh and engaging for repeat visitors while keeping operational costs and technical overhead low.
